My Name Is Drama Queen explores the contradictions hidden behind a powerful female presence — confidence and vulnerability, control and emotion, armour and softness.

The crowned figure appears almost theatrical against the strict black-and-white geometry of the background. Birds move around her as if belonging to another reality, while her gaze remains somewhere beyond the viewer. The composition feels bold and playful, yet beneath its surface lies a quieter psychological tension.

This duality is central to Ildze Balcere’s visual language.

The artist describes it in her own words:

“There are girls like that… whose skin hides armour, and beneath the armour — caramel. You look at them and all that comes to mind is April — a month where snowstorms and thaw can exist at the same time.”

The contrast continues through the material itself. Balcere combines embroidery, acrylic and mixed media, bringing the slow, meticulous process of hand embroidery into a monumental contemporary format.

What initially appears immediate and almost pop-cultural reveals itself, on closer inspection, as an accumulation of countless individual stitches and hours of manual work.

The title My Name Is Drama Queen may sound provocative and humorous, but the work ultimately speaks about something more intimate: the complexity of being both strong and fragile, and the many layers we carry behind the image we present to the world.
