I use fabric to explore the complex relationship between Ethiopian cultural heritage and
modernity, particularly in the contexts of education and colonialism. Through fragmented
fabrics, I present a metaphor for Ethiopia’s history within a colonial framework. My artistic
approach challenges traditional weaving techniques, creating assemblages of fragments
that reflect the multifaceted nature of Ethiopian culture. The work raises questions about
globalization’s impact, highlighting how mass production affects both collective and
individual identity. Inscriptions on books further emphasize this theme, drawing attention
to the influence of Western fashion brands on Ethiopian culture. By juxtaposing modern
motifs with traditional fabrics and weaving techniques, I underscore the urgency of
preserving Ethiopian cultural heritage amidst the forces of colonialism and globalization.
