When Art Opens the World — Stanley Wany at 1‑54

There are moments in contemporary art when presence becomes insight — when standing before a work by the artist himself transforms observation into understanding. At this year’s 1‑54 Contemporary African Art Fair, I had the rare pleasure of experiencing the work and presence of Stanley Wany, a multidisciplinary artist whose practice navigates identity, memory, myth, and the layered histories of the African diaspora.

Wany’s practice extends across drawing, painting, installation, and experimental narrative forms, tracing complex personal and collective narratives through materials that carry symbolic weight. Drawing on substances such as coffee, indigo, cotton, and sugarcane paper, his work evokes unresolved intersections of history, trauma, and resilience — material languages that resist simple interpretation and instead demand deep engagement.

At the heart of his 1‑54 presentation, including works such as Sur le chemin de Port au Prince (2024–2025), is an exploration of diasporic memory and cosmology, where figures, gestures, and marks become resonant carriers of presence and absence. Through conversation with the artist, I was granted access to his process — to how lineage, migration, and layered histories inform each mark, each gesture, each spatial choice. This is art that does not simply exist on paper but speaks with paper, using the medium itself as both archive and voice.

Meeting Stanley in person — feeling his articulation of ideas and witnessing his work up close — elevated what could have been a visual encounter into a profound dialogue. Works that might first appear abstract reveal themselves as repositories of lived and inherited histories, inviting the viewer into a reflective, almost participatory experience.

My sincere thanks to Karina Roman Justo and Christine Redfern for their generosity and insight in supporting these conversations. Their guidance enriched this experience and deepened the contextual understanding that is vital for collectors seeking works with longevity, intellectual depth, and real cultural voice.

In moments like these — where artist, artwork, and audience converge — art truly opens worlds. And it is a privilege to share these resonances with those who collect not only objects but the stories that shape them.

PORTRAIT STORY

Our gallery’s logo is a portrait, carrying a deep story about the identity that lives within each of us. Every person is like a “dome,” holding their own unique identity. In the wider world, society often influences or challenges our sense of self, and sometimes we hide it ourselves. At other times, we fully recognize who we are — and that awareness is vital. There are also moments when we explore who we could become, imagining possibilities and dreaming beyond what is visible.

An artist, deeply immersed in their creative process, often reveals themselves completely — open, authentic, and fully present in their identity.

The theme of the new exhibition is “Portrait Story.”

We invite artists to share portrait works accompanied by a personal story — “My Portrait.”

Selected works will also be brought together into a shared narrative, preserving stories of identity, self-discovery, and creative revelation.

Applications are open until February 7.
The exhibition opening (vernissage) is planned for February 28.
The exhibition will run until February 13, when, as every month, the gallery organizes an auction day, during which the artworks may also be sold at a potentially higher bidding price.

Throughout the exhibition period, additional thematically related discussion events will also take place.

The Mysticism of Collage and a World of Revelation

The delicate details of collage lead us into an entirely different world — a realm of imagination, revelation, and quiet mystery. It is a space where reality merges with the unexplainable, much like in the works of artist Zane Margo. Her creations are filled with secrecy, surreal depth, and a powerful sense of fantasy, inviting the viewer into a world one longs to remain in.

Within Zane’s art unfolds a universe of absolute surrealism and poetic mystery — a world rich in wonders and subtle, intangible magic. Her works remind us how much we might perceive if only we allowed ourselves the time to truly look, to feel, and to pause.

Zane’s collages offer a form of meditation — surreal, yet deeply real. They create an inner experience that can be transformed within ourselves and reflected in the life around us. It is like a fairy tale that exists within reality itself. And who would not wish to step inside such a world?

As an artist, Zane is a profoundly thoughtful and introspective feminine presence. Her words, reflections, and way of expression invite us to drift into a space of revelation and inner truth. Then, almost like being drawn into a whirlpool, we fall — until we gently collide with wonder. Suddenly, everything becomes playful again. The real turns unreal, and the unreal reveals itself as real.

I invite you to enter into a dialogue with Zane about the essence of the world — through her works. Allow them to speak to you, to open new perceptions, and to rediscover yourself anew.

If, during the journey or collection mapping, you express interest, I consciously pay attention to your individual preferences. Your ideas, feelings, and the character of your space become part of my selection process. I choose works that naturally integrate into your interior or collection, preserving my aesthetic, the story, and the context of the journey. This is a collaboration where you travel virtually alongside me — following the process, discoveries, and the “pearls” found, until the art takes its place in your environment.

Zane Margo (1992), whose real name is Zane Ozoliņa, is an artist and photographer from Latvia, who cultivates her technique through self-directed exploration.

Recycled paper becomes the foundation for collages that explore deeply personal and metaphorical themes. Each work reflects an exploration of philosophical themes, emerging from a process that is both meditative and experimental. By assembling fragments of discarded materials, she transforms what was once overlooked into new visual and surreal narratives.

Work leans toward the avant-garde, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface and glimpse the quiet spaces where meaning takes shape.

While art has been an enduring element of her life since adolescence, Zane Margo formally began her artistic practice in 2025.

Liene Pčolka

Creativity has always been a natural part of Liene Pčolka’s life. From her school years, she was drawn to drawing, painting, and crafts — a desire to create, explore, and experience. Although she studied IT and worked in graphic design, it was in painting that she discovered her true mode of expression.

Her journey in painting began at the Jelgava Art School and continued under the guidance of Latvian painters Indulis Landau, Raitis Junkers, and Sandra Strēle. Under their mentorship, she learned to see and feel — not only form, but also mood and breath.

For Liene, painting is a dialogue with herself and the world. Her work evolves with her emotions, experiences, and the passage of time. She allows colors to speak, brushstrokes to breathe, and composition to live. Her paintings do not dictate meaning — they resonate within the viewer.

Painting is her joy, her meditation, and her freedom.

“Between Two Suns” Exhibition in Panevėžys

In July and August 2025, my collaborative exhibition “Between Two Suns” was displayed at the Panevėžys Creativity Centre in Lithuania. This exhibition, created in partnership with Ethiopian artist Kirubel Melke, explores the intersection of our cultural backgrounds through art. I work with recycled paper to create delicate, light-infused forms, while Kirubel uses textile to continue his African heritage. Together, we address global and political themes, seeking aesthetic expression and dialogue between our cultures. The exhibition represents the differences between two suns, highlighting the contrasts between different cultures.Panevėžys Now
